In February 2026, Floreana Island in Ecuador's Galápagos archipelago made headlines for a major ecological milestone. On February 20, 158 endangered giant tortoises—hybrids bred from partial descendants of the extinct Floreana lineage—were released onto the island for the first time in over 180 years.
