Why in News?
- TRAI recently revamped its DND (Do Not Disturb) and MySpeed apps after about 10 years to tackle spam calls/SMS and monitor real-time network performance. Aim to boost user accessibility and service quality in India's telecom sector.
TRAI DND (Do Not Disturb) App
- Multilingual Support: Now features an expanded multilingual interface to increase accessibility across India's diverse linguistic landscape.
- Simplified Reporting: Users can now register complaints in fewer steps and track them through a unique Complaint Reference ID.
- Know Your Sender: A new feature that allows users to verify registered headers and the designated 1600-series numbers used by financial institutions.
- Preference Management: Improved interface for customizing DND preferences to block specific types of promotional communications.
- Dual-SIM Compatibility: Enhanced support for managing preferences and reporting spam across both SIM cards in a single device.
TRAI MySpeed App
- The revamped MySpeed app enables users to monitor their service provider's network performance under real-world conditions.
- Comprehensive Metrics: Beyond download and upload speeds, it now measures latency, jitter, and packet loss to provide a more accurate picture of connectivity quality.
- Real-World Simulations: Includes specific tests for video streaming and web browsing to mimic daily internet usage.
- Advanced Testing: Offers "Drive Test" capabilities, including continuous and scheduled testing across different geographic locations.
- Geospatial Maps: Provides location-based historical performance results through interactive maps to help users make informed service provider choices.
- Data-Driven Regulation: Data collected from consumer tests is anonymized and used by TRAI to monitor and improve the Quality of Service (QoS) across the industry.
Note: A revamped MyCall app, dedicated specifically to capturing call-quality feedback, is expected to launch in March 2026.
