Yantra India Limited granted Miniratna Category-I status
Why in news?
Yantra India Limited (YIL), a Defence Public Sector Undertaking (DPSU), has been granted Miniratna Category-I status by Defence Ministry on 2 February 2026. This recognition empowers YIL with greater financial autonomy, including the ability to incur capital expenditure up to ₹500 crore, marking its transformation into a profitable and export-oriented defence manufacturer.
Importance of the Status
- Financial Autonomy: YIL’s Board can now approve capital expenditure projects, modernization, and equipment purchases up to ₹500 crore without government approval.
- Operational Independence: Greater flexibility in decision-making, procurement, and partnerships.
- Boost to Aatmanirbhar Bharat: Strengthens India’s self-reliance in defence manufacturing and exports.
Strategic Importance
- Defence Indigenisation: YIL has maximized local sourcing and manufacturing, reducing import dependence.
- Export Growth: From zero exports in 2021-22 to over ₹321 crore in 2024-25, YIL is now contributing to India’s defence exports.
- Product Range: Includes carbon fibre composites, medium & large calibre ammunition assemblies, armoured vehicles, artillery guns, main battle tanks, glass composites, aluminium alloys.
