Military Quantum Mission policy framework

Recent News
On January 22, 2026, India's Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Anil Chauhan, released the
Military Quantum Mission (MQM) Policy Framework. This comprehensive document establishes a strategic roadmap for integrating quantum technologies into the Indian Armed Forces to achieve technological dominance in future multi-domain warfare.

The Four Core Pillars
The framework focuses on integrating four key technology verticals across the Army, Navy, and Air Force:
  • Quantum Communication: Securing military networks with ultra-secure links, such as Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), making them resilient against interception or hacking.
  • Quantum Computing: Enhancing decision-making and solving complex operational problems significantly faster than classical computers.
  • Quantum Sensing & Metrology: Providing high-accuracy navigation and detection, critical for operations in GPS-denied zones or undersea warfare.
  • Quantum Materials & Devices: Developing advanced sensors and electronics hardened for survival in high-stress battlefield environments.
Strategic Objectives and Implementation
  • National Alignment: The MQM is strictly aligned with the broader National Quantum Mission (NQM), positioning the Defence Forces as active partners rather than passive end-users.
  • Civil-Military Fusion: The policy emphasizes collaboration between the government, industry, and academia through dedicated governing bodies to accelerate the transition from laboratory research to field deployment.
  • Jointness & Integration: It promotes a unified approach across the tri-services to ensure synergy in technological adoption and avoid siloed development.
  • Roadmap to Dominance: The framework outlines specific milestones and goals to secure "technological supremacy" on the future battlefield.
Contextual Significance (2026)
The release follows the Indian Army's declaration of 2026 as the "Year of Networking & Data Centricity," highlighting a shift from platform-centric to network-centric warfare where information speed and secure communication are paramount. It also builds on recent indigenous developments, such as the DRDO's Quantum Technology Research Centre (QTRC) established in 2025.
