Why in News?
On January 22, 2026, the Vice-President of India, Shri C. P. Radhakrishnan, officially released a special commemorative coin issued by the Ministry of Finance to honor the Maharshi's spiritual influence and the centenary of Sri Ramanasramam.
About Sri Ramana Maharshi
- Sri Ramana Maharshi (1879–1950) was a globally revered Indian Hindu sage and a
- jivanmukta (liberated being) who lived for over 50 years at the foot of the holy Arunachala Hill in Tiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu.
- He is celebrated for his profound silence and direct path to Self-realization through Self-enquiry (Atma-vichara).
- Establishment of Sri Ramanasramam: His residence grew into the Sri Ramanasramam, which became a global spiritual center, attracting notable visitors like Paul Brunton and Paramahansa Yogananda.
Core Teachings and Philosophy
The Maharshi's teachings were based on Advaita Vedanta (non-dualism), emphasizing that the individual "I" is an illusion and only the Self is real.
- Self-Enquiry: His primary instruction was to relentlessly ask "Who am I?" to track the ego back to its source in the heart, where it dissolves into pure consciousness.
- The Power of Silence: He often taught in deep silence (Mouna), believing it to be the most potent transmission of Truth that could directly still the minds of seekers.
- Bhakti and Surrender: For those finding enquiry difficult, he recommended complete surrender to the Divine or the Guru.
