Type 096 Tang-Class Submarine
Why in news?
China recently unveiled the Type 096 Tang-class submarine, marking a major advancement in its nuclear-powered ballistic missile capabilities. This next-generation SSBN enhances China's undersea nuclear deterrent with superior stealth, size, and missile range compared to prior models.
About Type 096 (Tang-class)
The Type 096 submarine (NATO: Tang-class) is China’s next-generation nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine (SSBN). It is expected to carry the JL-3 submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) with a range of up to 6,000 miles, making it capable of striking targets like the U.S. without leaving Chinese waters.
- Operator: People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN)
- Predecessor: Type 094 (Jin-class)
- Displacement: ~20,000 tons submerged
- Propulsion: Nuclear reactor
- Armament: JL-3 SLBMs (estimated 16–24 launch tubes)
- operational as of 2026
Key Features
- Stealth & Sensors: Designed with advanced quieting technology, making it harder to detect compared to Type 094.
