About Narco Coordination Centre (NCORD)
The Narco Coordination Centre (NCORD) is India’s multi-tier mechanism to coordinate efforts against drug trafficking and abuse. It was first set up in 2016 and later restructured into a four-tier system in 2019 to strengthen coordination between central and state agencies.
Objectives
- Coordination: Bring together central and state agencies to fight drug trafficking.
- Policy Implementation: Ensure uniform enforcement of drug laws across India.
- Information Sharing: Facilitate intelligence exchange between agencies.
- Demand Reduction: Support initiatives to reduce drug abuse through awareness and rehabilitation.
Challenges & Risks
- Inter-agency Coordination: Despite NCORD, overlapping jurisdictions can slow down enforcement.
- Cross-border Trafficking: India’s proximity to the “Golden Crescent” and “Golden Triangle” makes it vulnerable to international drug flows.
- Awareness & Rehabilitation: Enforcement alone is insufficient; demand reduction through education and rehabilitation is equally critical.
