The Battery Pack Aadhaar System is a proposed framework by the Indian government to assign a unique digital identity to every EV and large industrial battery, enabling full lifecycle tracking from manufacturing to recycling.
Key Highlights of the Battery Pack Aadhaar System
- Unique ID (BPAN): Each battery pack will get a 21-character Battery Pack Aadhaar Number (BPAN), similar to Aadhaar for individuals.
- QR Code Integration: A scannable QR code will be attached to every battery for easy identification and tracking.
- Scope:
- Covers EV batteries and industrial batteries above 2 kWh.
- Excludes Starting, Lighting, and Ignition (SLI) batteries and portable batteries.
- Data Stored:
- Static data: Manufacturer identity, battery type, material composition, carbon footprint.
- Dynamic data: Usage history, performance, recycling status.
- Lifecycle Tracking: Ensures traceability from production → usage → recycling/disposal, supporting India’s circular economy goals.
- Stakeholder Responsibility: Battery producers/importers must assign BPANs to every battery they introduce into the market.
