Livestock Health & Disease Control Programme
The Livestock Health & Disease Control Programme (LHDCP) is a centrally sponsored scheme by the Government of India aimed at mitigating risks to animal health, thereby enhancing livestock productivity and safeguarding rural livelihoods.
The program has been recently revised (in March 2025) with an outlay of βΉ3,880 crore for the financial years 2024-25 and 2025-26.
Key Objectives
The LHDCP aims to control and eradicate major diseases like Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) and Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) by 2030, and Bovine Brucellosis and Classical Swine Fever (CSF) through vaccination and surveillance.
It also seeks to provide doorstep veterinary services via Mobile Veterinary Units (MVUs) accessible through a toll-free number (1962), assist states in controlling other significant animal diseases, and ensure affordable veterinary medicines, including traditional options, are available through various outlets.
Components of the Programme
The LHDCP consists of three main components:
- National Animal Disease Control Programme (NADCP): Focuses on mass vaccination to control and eradicate FMD and Brucellosis in various livestock.
- Livestock Health & Disease Control (LH&DC): A broader component with sub-components for controlling critical diseases (like PPR and CSF), establishing and strengthening MVUs for doorstep services, and assisting states in managing other diseases, enhancing diagnostic capabilities, and providing compensation during outbreaks.
- Pashu Aushadhi Initiative: A new component introduced in 2025 to improve the supply chain and availability of cost-effective generic veterinary medicines in rural areas, with an allocation of βΉ75 crore.
