Swadesh Darshan Scheme
The Swadesh Darshan Scheme is a flagship initiative of the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, launched in 2014-15. Its primary goal is the integrated development of theme-based tourist circuits and sustainable tourism destinations across the country.
The scheme has evolved in two phases:
Swadesh Darshan 1.0 (Thematic Circuits)
- The initial phase focused on developing infrastructure along 15 identified thematic circuits to enhance visitor experience and generate economic growth.
- Key objectives included job creation, economic growth, planned circuit development, promoting cultural and heritage values, and a community-based, pro-poor approach. The 15 circuits covered themes such as Buddhist, Coastal, Desert, Eco, Heritage, Himalayan, Krishna, North-East, Ramayana, Rural, Spiritual, Sufi, Tirthankar, Tribal, and Wildlife.
Swadesh Darshan 2.0 (Sustainable Destinations)
- Revamped as Swadesh Darshan 2.0 (SD2.0), this phase shifted from a circuit-based to a destination-centric and sustainable model.
- Its objectives include developing sustainable destinations, achieving "Aatmanirbhar Bharat" through tourism, enhancing infrastructure and services, and promoting human capital development, destination management, and private sector participation.
- Key features of SD2.0 are a destination-centric approach, emphasis on sustainability and eco-tourism, boosting the local economy through "Vocal for Local," and a Challenge Based Destination Development sub-scheme.
- The Swadesh Darshan scheme aligns with other government initiatives like Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Skill India, and Make in India, aiming to position tourism as a major driver for job creation and economic growth.
