Konark Wheel

The Konark Wheel, or Konark Chakra, is an iconic element of the 13th-century Konark Sun Temple in Odisha, India, and is famous for its architectural brilliance, rich symbolism, and function as an accurate sundial.

Design and Architecture
  • Chariot of the Sun God: The entire Sun Temple is designed in the shape of a colossal chariot for the sun god, Surya, with 24 intricately carved wheels along its base, drawn by seven horses.
  • Dimensions: Each massive wheel is approximately 9 feet 9 inches (nearly 3 meters) in diameter and is made of stone.
  • Spoke Arrangement: Each wheel features 8 wider spokes and 8 thinner spokes, totaling 16 spokes per wheel. The space around and within the spokes is adorned with detailed carvings of daily life, mythological scenes, animals, and foliage.
Symbolism
  • Time and Cycles: The 12 pairs of wheels are widely interpreted as representing the 12 months of the year, while the 24 wheels signify the 24 hours of a day.
  • "Wheel of Life": According to some interpretations, the wheels symbolize the "Wheel of Life" or Kalachakra, representing the continuous cycle of creation, preservation, and realization.
  • National Symbol: A depiction of the Konark Chakra with its 24 spokes is adapted into the Indian national flag (the Ashoka Chakra), symbolizing progress and continuous change. It has also been used as a prominent backdrop for international diplomatic events, like the G20 Summit, to showcase India's heritage.
Function as a Sundial
One of the most remarkable features is the wheels' engineering that allows them to function as a precise sundial.
  • Time Measurement: The shadow cast by the spokes can be used to calculate the exact time of day, a testament to the advanced astronomical knowledge of the era.
  • Spoke Intervals: The wider spokes denote 3-hour intervals (prahars), the thinner spokes represent 1.5-hour periods, and tiny beads between the spokes mark 3-minute increments.
  • Accuracy: By tracking the sun's shadow on the wheel, observers can determine the precise time from sunrise to sunset.
