INTERPOL Red Notice
Why in news?
In December 2025, international wildlife trafficker Yangchen Lachungpa, linked to tiger parts and pangolin scale smuggling from Satpura Tiger Reserve in 2015, was arrested in Sikkim under an INTERPOL Red Notice through joint efforts by Wildlife Crime Control Bureau and Madhya Pradesh Tiger Strike Force.
About
- A Red Notice is an international alert issued by INTERPOL requesting law enforcement worldwide to locate and provisionally arrest a person pending extradition or similar legal action.
- It includes identifying details like name, date of birth, nationality, photos, fingerprints, and physical traits, plus details of serious crimes such as murder, rape, or armed robbery.
- Red Notices are requested by a member country's judicial authority (e.g., via arrest warrant) and published only if they comply with INTERPOL's rules, excluding political, military, religious, or racial matters.
- It is not an arrest warrant itself; member countries decide on arrest and extradition based on their laws.
- Notices are shared securely among 196 member countries' police, aiding global cooperation in apprehending fugitives.
