Why in news?
In the 2025 edition, India ranks third with a score of 40.0, classified as a major power in Asia, with noted strengths in economic capability and future resources, though weaker in defense networks. China and the United States hold the top two positions respectively, with China being close to superpower status in the region.

The Asia Power Index is an annual ranking published by the Lowy Institute that measures the relative power of 27 countries in the Indo-Pacific region based on 131 indicators across eight thematic measures including economic capability, military capability, diplomatic influence, and cultural influence.
