About Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana - National Rural Livelihoods Mission
The Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana - National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM), a program by the Ministry of Rural Development, is a government initiative aimed at reducing rural poverty. It focuses on enabling poor rural households to access self-employment and skilled wage employment opportunities for sustainable livelihood improvement.
Core Mission and Objectives
The main goal is to organize rural poor households into self-managed groups, particularly Women's Self Help Groups (SHGs), and support their economic activities. Key objectives include building community institutions, providing access to financial services and markets, diversifying income through various enterprises, and ensuring social inclusion and access to other government schemes.
Key Components and Implementation Strategies
The mission's strategy is built on four main areas:
- Social Mobilization and Institution Building: Forming and nurturing sustainable SHGs with participation from poor households.
- Financial Inclusion: Connecting SHGs to banking systems, providing financial support and literacy.
- Sustainable Livelihoods: Enhancing existing livelihoods and creating new opportunities in different sectors.
- Social Inclusion and Entitlement Access: Ensuring the mission's benefits and convergence with other government programs reach the most vulnerable.
Key Programs under DAY-NRLM
The mission includes Centrally Sponsored Schemes for skill development:
- Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Grameen Kaushalya Yojana (DDU-GKY): Offers skill training to rural youth aged 15-35 for placement.
- Rural Self Employment Training Institutes (RSETIs): Provides entrepreneurship training for rural youth aged 18-50.
Impact
DAY-NRLM has significantly impacted rural India by mobilizing over 10 crore households into more than 90 lakh SHGs, expanding access to credit and markets, and supporting rural women in various activities. The program is vital for rural poverty reduction, promoting community-led development and women's empowerment.
