National Unity Day
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lead the celebrations of National Unity Day at the Statue of Unity in Gujarat’s Narmada Valley on October 31.
About National Unity Day
National Unity Day, or Rashtriya Ekta Diwas, is celebrated every year on October 31st to honor the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. The day was introduced by the Indian government in 2014 to acknowledge Patel's immense role in the political integration of India and to promote national unity.
Who was Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel?
  • Architect of modern India: As India's first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister, Patel was instrumental in convincing over 560 semi-autonomous princely states to accede to the newly formed Indian Union after independence in 1947.
  • The Iron Man of India: His unyielding efforts and steadfast commitment to national integration earned him this sobriquet.
  • Civil service founder: He is also regarded as the "patron saint of India's civil servants" for his role in establishing the modern All India Services system.
