About Network Survey Vehicle
A Network Survey Vehicle (NSV) is a specialized vehicle equipped with advanced sensors and high-speed data acquisition systems used to automatically collect comprehensive road inventory and pavement condition data. The data collected is used for road asset management, pavement maintenance planning, and improving overall road quality and safety.
Key features and components
An NSV is typically a van or SUV outfitted with sophisticated technology that allows for continuous data collection at normal highway speeds. The core components include:
- Laser Profilometers: Infrared lasers measure the road's surface texture and the International Roughness Index (IRI), which indicates riding quality.
- Laser Crack Measurement System (LCMS) or LiDAR: These systems use high-accuracy lasers or Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) to detect and measure surface distresses such as cracks, potholes, rutting (wheel path depressions), and ravelling.
- High-Resolution Cameras: 360-degree cameras capture continuous, geo-tagged imagery of the road surface, roadside assets, and surrounding environment.
- Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS): Provides highly accurate location data (latitude, longitude, and altitude) for precise mapping and geo-referencing of all collected information.
- Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU): Tracks the vehicle's motion and position, providing data on road geometry, including cross-slope, gradient, and curvature.
- Distance Measuring Instrument (DMI): Accurately calculates the distance traveled, ensuring the precision of data collected over long stretches of road.
- Data Acquisition and Processing Software: Manages the collection of data in real-time, then processes it later to automatically detect and analyze road defects without human intervention.
How NSVs improve road infrastructure
