Project Arunank
Recently, the Project Arunank of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) marked its 18th Raising Day.
About Project Arunank
Project Arunank is an infrastructure initiative implemented by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) to provide strategic road connectivity in remote areas of Arunachal Pradesh. Established in 2008, the project has built and maintained roads and bridges to support both civilian populations and the operational requirements of the Indian Armed Forces.
Key details of Project Arunank:
  • Location: The project operates in Arunachal Pradesh, especially in remote, high-altitude, and border regions.
  • Objectives: The primary aims are to enhance connectivity to remote valleys and forward areas, support socio-economic growth, and meet the logistical needs of the armed forces.
Notable Achievements:
  • Hapoli-Sarli-Huri Road: Blacktopped for the first time since India's independence, this 278-kilometer road connects one of the most isolated regions of the Kurung Kumey district.
  • Daporijo Bridge: The project reconstructed the Daporijo Bridge over the Subansiri river, enhancing troop and supply movement along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China.
  • Maza Border Post Connectivity: On December 28, 2022, Project Arunank successfully established road connectivity to the Maza border post in the Upper Subansiri district, an achievement that received praise from high-ranking government officials.
  • Innovative Technologies: To overcome challenging terrain and harsh weather conditions, the BRO has adopted sustainable construction methods for Project Arunank, including the use of steel slag, geotextiles, and geo cells.
  • Green Initiatives: In addition to construction, the project includes environmental efforts, such as tree plantation drives under the "Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam" (One Tree for Mother) campaign.
  • Worker Welfare: The BRO has introduced special welfare measures for the project's casual paid laborers, offering improved shelters, protective clothing, and regular health camps.
Recent Developments: On October 24, 2025, Project Arunank celebrated its 18th Raising Day, with plans announced for upcoming initiatives, including further road widening and the construction of new bridges and tunnels.
