About JAIMEX 2025
JAIMEX 2025  was a bilateral naval exercise held in October 2025 between the Indian Navy (IN) and the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF). The exercise highlighted the "Special Strategic and Global Partnership" between the two nations and their shared vision of a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific region.
Participants
  • Indian Navy (IN): Represented by the indigenously built Shivalik-class guided-missile stealth frigate, INS Sahyadri.
  • Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF): Deployed JMSDF ships Asahi, Oumi, and the submarine Jinryu.
Exercise phases
The exercise was conducted in two phases, taking place in Japan:
  • Sea Phase: From October 16 to 18, the naval forces performed advanced Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW), missile defense drills, flying operations, and underway replenishment.
  • Harbour Phase: On October 21, the crew of INS Sahyadri docked at Yokosuka, Japan, for cultural and professional exchanges. Activities included cross-deck visits, operational planning, sharing best practices, and a combined yoga session.
Strategic significance
JAIMEX 2025 reinforces the naval cooperation between India and Japan, which is considered a crucial element for ensuring peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific. It also aligns with India's "Aatmanirbhar Bharat" (Self-Reliant India) initiative by showcasing indigenously built defense technology like the INS Sahyadri.
