Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)
The latest developments on ASEAN as of October 2025 include the conclusion of the 47th ASEAN Summit held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. of the Philippines received the ASEAN Chairship gavel, marking the start of the Philippines' hosting of ASEAN 2026. The summit focused on regional cooperation, economic partnerships, sustainable development, and peace and stability in the region.
A major highlight was the signing of an upgraded free trade agreement between ASEAN and China, called version 3.0. This upgraded pact includes new areas such as digital economy, green economy, agriculture, and pharmaceuticals. The agreement aims to boost market access and deepen economic ties amid ongoing challenges including US tariffs affecting trade.
About ASEAN
  • The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is a regional intergovernmental organization promoting cooperation among member states in Southeast Asia. Its motto is "One Vision, One Identity, One Community".
  • ASEAN was established in 1967 by Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. The organization currently includes 11 nations, with Timor-Leste slated to join in 2025.
Objectives and principles
Operating on consensus, ASEAN aims to boost economic growth, social progress, and cultural development, while fostering regional peace and stability based on the rule of law and UN principles. Key principles include mutual respect for sovereignty and non-interference.
Key organizational structures
The ASEAN Charter provides the legal framework.
  • ASEAN Summit: The highest policy-making body, consisting of heads of state or government.
  • ASEAN Coordinating Council (ACC): Prepares for the Summit and includes foreign ministers.
  • ASEAN Community Councils: Oversee the Political-Security, Economic, and Socio-Cultural Communities. For more details, see Migrant Forum in Asia.
  • ASEAN Secretariat: Located in Jakarta, it provides administrative support.
Achievements and initiatives
ASEAN has promoted regional integration, including the ASEAN Economic Community, which aims for a single market. It has trade agreements with several partners. The organization also addresses political and security matters through frameworks like the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation and hosts regional forums.
Other notable points from the summit:
  • The ASEAN bloc now includes 11 member states with Timor-Leste completing its accession, a historic milestone for the organization.
  • The ASEAN Plus One and ASEAN Plus Three summits reviewed progress in trade, digitalization, maritime cooperation, energy, health, and education cooperation with dialogue partners including China, Japan, South Korea, and New Zealand (which marked 50 years of relations with ASEAN).
  • US President Trump attended the summit, reaffirming US commitment to Southeast Asia and witnessing a ceasefire pact between Thailand and Cambodia.
  • Discussions addressed challenges such as Myanmar's political crisis, the South China Sea code of conduct, and the impact of US tariff policies on ASEAN supply chains, with Malaysia pushing for sectoral tariff engagements.
In summary, the latest ASEAN summit underscored economic integration, enhanced trade with China, new membership expansion, and ongoing regional security dialogues, blending economic and geopolitical priorities.
