Why in news?
Significant progress in bilateral defence cooperation is highlighted in the India-Australia Joint Statement from the inaugural Australia-India Defence Ministers' Dialogue held in October 2025.
Key points of joint statement:
- Signing of three key agreements: Information Sharing, Mutual Submarine Rescue Support and Cooperation, and Terms of Reference for Joint Staff Talks.
- Australia welcomed India’s participation in Exercise Talisman Sabre 2025 and looks forward to 2027.
- Advancement of a Joint Maritime Security Collaboration Roadmap and mutual efforts to renew and strengthen the Joint Declaration on Defence and Security Cooperation.
- Enhanced defence industrial collaboration with defence trade missions and joint working groups on technology and materiel.
- Operationalising the Air-to-Air Refuelling arrangement and expanding cooperation across all defence domains.
- Maritime security collaboration involving Quad partners (India, Australia, Japan, US) was also emphasized to ensure a free, open Indo-Pacific.
- India offered maintenance and repair for Royal Australian Navy ships in Indian shipyards during deployments in the Indian Ocean region.
This reflects deepening strategic and defence partnership aligned with regional peace and security objectives.
