Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan inaugurated the Aranmula Uthrittathi Vallamkali on 30 August 2026 on the Pamba River – the first time an Indian Vice President has inaugurated this event in its modern organised form.

On 27 August 2026, the Department of Consumer Affairs notified the Legal Metrology (Indian Standard Time) Rules, 2026 under Section 52 of the Legal Metrology Act, 2009, making Indian Standard Time (IST) the single mandatory time reference for legal, administrative, commercial and official purposes across India.

Key Features & Structural Weaknesses
  • Unstable Geologic Composition: Unlike engineered dams, these natural obstructions consist of loosely packed, unconsolidated soil, boulders, gravel, mud, and ice.
  • Variable Lifespan: A barrier lake's existence is highly unpredictable, lasting anywhere from a few hours to several days, months, or decades before failing.

Physical Appearance & Features
  • Snakebird Nickname: When swimming, its entire body stays submerged under water while only its long, slender neck ripples above the surface, closely mimicking a swimming snake.
  • Spear-Like Bill: Features a straight, highly pointed, dagger-like beak adapted exclusively for impaling aquatic prey.
  • Skeletal Kink: Possesses highly developed neck muscles and a unique structural bend at the 8th and 9th vertebrae. This mechanical "spring" allows it to rapidly flex and dart its neck forward with extreme force to stab fish underwater.
  • Wettable Feathers: Unlike ducks, its feathers are not waterproof. This lack of buoyancy helps it submerge smoothly to hunt, but forces the bird to perch out of water with its wings spread open wide to dry off.
