Why in News?
MALHAR 2026 has been in the news because Vice President Shri C. P. Radhakrishnan inaugurated it on 21 August 2026 in New Delhi as a youth-centric, monsoon-themed celebration of Indian classical music, aimed at connecting younger generations with India’s intangible cultural heritage.

RK-251 Drug

Why in News?
RK-251 is in the news because on August 19, 2026, Indian scientists have successfully developed a breakthrough, experimental "smart" cancer drug candidate that selectively targets and destroys tumour cells while completely sparing healthy tissues.
 

How RK-251 Works?
  • Smart Prodrug Design: RK-251 is engineered as a "prodrug"—an inactive chemical substance that remains completely harmless while circulating through normal, healthy tissues.
  • ROS-Responsive Trigger: Cancer cells naturally contain abnormally high levels of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS). RK-251 uses this harsh chemical environment as a key to turn itself "on".
  • Releasing the Payload: Upon encountering elevated ROS inside a cancer cell, the prodrug splits apart to release a potent, pre-existing anticancer molecule called NBDHEX.
  • Inhibiting Cancer Defence: Once released, NBDHEX binds to and blocks GSTP1, a detoxification protein that tumour cells actively use to survive and resist treatment.
  • Solves Delivery Limitations: On its own, NBDHEX is water-insoluble and poorly absorbed by the body. Chemically masking it into the RK-251 prodrug successfully overcomes this drug-delivery challenge.
Theranostic (Dual Therapy + Diagnosis) Capabilities
  • Fluorescent Tagging: The RK-251 molecule is equipped with a specific near-infrared fluorescent marker known as QCy7.
  • Real-Time Tracking: When the drug encounters ROS and triggers cell death, it simultaneously glows. This permits medical researchers to track exactly where, and how effectively, the drug is activating inside the body in real time.
  • Preclinical Stage Only: Despite the massive excitement, RK-251 is an experimental candidate and has not yet been tested on human patients.
  • Long Regulatory Road: Before it can sit on pharmacy shelves or be deployed in hospitals, it must clear rigorous animal safety scales, establish precise dosing guidelines, and successfully complete multi-phase human clinical trials.

  • Combats Aggressive Cancers: In laboratory cell cultures, RK-251 demonstrated aggressive efficacy against triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) cells, a subtype notorious for lacking receptors and being incredibly difficult to treat.

Taxonomy and Habitat
  • Classification: Sea urchins are marine invertebrates belonging to the phylum Echinodermata. They share this phylum with starfish, sand dollars, and sea cucumbers.
  • Global Distribution: They populate every ocean on Earth, spanning from warm tropical coral reefs to freezing polar waters.
  • Depth Range: While most commonly found in shallow intertidal zones and rocky coasts, they can survive on the deep ocean floor at depths exceeding 5,000 to 7,000 metres.
Anatomy and Physical Features
  • The "Test": Their body is enclosed in a rigid, spherical, or somewhat flattened outer exoskeleton called a test, which is composed of interlocking calcium carbonate plates.
  • Spines & Protection: They are covered in movable, sharp spines used for defence and movement. Some tropical species, like the flower urchin, possess highly toxic venom glands within their spines or small pinchers (pedicellariae).
  • Water Vascular System: They lack true blood. Instead, they use a specialized hydraulic water vascular system to pump seawater through their "tube feet" to move, grasp objects, and breathe.
  • Aristotle’s Lantern: Their mouth is located on the underside and contains a complex, highly efficient chewing apparatus called Aristotle's lantern, equipped with five sharp teeth strong enough to scrape rock.
Diet and Ecological Role
  • Feeding Habitats: Primarily herbivorous or opportunistic omnivores, their main diet consists of algae, kelp, and marine plant matter.

  • Definition: A craton is an ancient, exceptionally stable portion of the Earth's continental crust and topmost mantle.
  • Characteristics: They are found in the deep interiors of tectonic plates, have survived billions of years without major tectonic disruption, and act as the foundational bedrocks of modern continents.
Geological Features & Composition
  • Region: Located in eastern India, spanning major portions of Jharkhand and Odisha, with extensions into West Bengal.
  • Boundaries: Situated between the Chhota Nagpur plateau to the north and the Eastern Ghats mobile belt to the south.
  • Age: Houses some of the planet's oldest geological formations, dating between 3.2 to 3.8 billion years old (Archean Eon).
  • Greenstone Successions: It features unique "greenstone belts"—rock assemblages consisting of submarine volcanic rocks (like komatiites and pillowed lava) mixed with minor sedimentary rocks.
