Sri Aurobindo
Why in News?
- 15 August 2026 marked the 154th birth anniversary of Sri Aurobindo, coinciding with India’s 80th Independence Day. Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to him, recalling his contribution to India’s freedom struggle and his vision of human progress.
- The coincidence is historically significant because Sri Aurobindo was born on 15 August 1872, the same date on which India became independent in 1947.
Sri Aurobindo: Key Contributions
- Freedom Struggle: He was a prominent nationalist during the Swadeshi Movement, advocating Swaraj, boycott, national education and passive resistance against British rule.
- Revolutionary Nationalism: Through newspapers such as Bande Mataram and Karmayogin, he articulated a more assertive form of nationalism and criticised moderate constitutional politics.
- Alipore Bomb Case (1908): He was arrested and tried in the Alipore Conspiracy Case; his year-long imprisonment became a major turning point in his life.
- Spiritual Transformation: After his release, he increasingly shifted from active politics towards spiritual philosophy and yoga, eventually settling in Pondicherry in 1910.
- Integral Yoga: He developed the philosophy of Integral Yoga, which sought not merely individual liberation but the transformation of human consciousness and life.
- Major Works: The Life Divine, Savitri, The Synthesis of Yoga, Essays on the Gita and The Human Cycle.
Aheesa Digital Innovations
Why in News?
- On 15 August 2026, MeitY announced that Aheesa Digital Innovations, a Chennai-based fabless semiconductor startup, achieved first-pass silicon success with “VIHAAN”, an indigenous broadband networking System-on-Chip (SoC) built on the VEGA microprocessor (RISC-V).
- A day earlier, on 14 August 2026, Aheesa signed an MoU with Guidance (Tamil Nadu) to set up a βΉ250 crore semiconductor design & product engineering centre in Chennai, expected to create 300+ jobs.
Background
- Aheesa was founded in 2021 as a fabless chip design company focused on networking, telecom, broadband, cybersecurity, and edge computing.
- It is supported under the Design Linked Incentive (DLI) Scheme of the Semicon India Programme (MeitY) and has received seed funding from Tamil Nadu Emerging Sector Seed Fund (TNESSF) via TNIFMC and private investors (~βΉ40 crore in 2026).
Key Features

- Indigenous broadband networking SoC for fibre broadband applications, based on RISC-V architecture.
- Taped out on Republic Day 2026; achieved first-pass silicon success on Independence Day 2026; production tape-out targeted for 2027.

- Talent & IP: Need sustained investment in skilled designers, verification, and IP portfolios to move up the value chain.
Way Forward
- Encourage public procurement and pilot deployments of VIHAAN-based equipment in BBNL/BSNL fibre projects and state networks.
- Strengthen DLI follow-on support (design, fabrication tie-ups, packaging, testing) and link with Semicon Fab proposals.
- Promote academia–industry linkages in Tamil Nadu and other states for RISC-V and networking chip talent.
RSVC-AMRIT Platform
Why in News?
- On 15 August 2026 (80th Independence Day), the Principal Scientific Adviser (PSA) to GoI launched the RSVC-AMRIT platform, developed by NABARD in collaboration with the Office of PSA.
- It is designed as the digital backbone of the RuTAGe Smart Village Centre (RSVC) ecosystem to strengthen rural innovation and technology transfer.
Background
- RSVC (RuTAGe Smart Village Centre): A network of village-level technology hubs that facilitate transfer of appropriate, affordable technologies from research institutions, startups, and innovators to rural communities.
- Sectors covered include agriculture, rural enterprises, renewable energy, water & sanitation, education, assistive technologies, and citizen services.
- Earlier, RSVC functioned mainly through physical centres; AMRIT adds a national digital layer for discovery, validation, and scaling of technologies.

- Supports Atmanirbhar Gram and Viksit Bharat by leveraging technology for productivity, livelihoods, and service delivery in rural India.
Challenges
- Awareness & onboarding: Success depends on active participation of research institutions, startups, and rural users, many of whom have limited digital exposure.
- Quality & validation: Ensuring that listed technologies are context-appropriate, affordable, and rigorously validated for rural conditions.
- Integration with existing schemes: Need to dovetail with Krishi Vigyan Kendras, NABARD projects, SFURTI, NRLM, etc. to avoid duplication.
Way Forward
- Aggressive capacity-building for RSVC managers, KVKs, and local NGOs to use AMRIT for demand aggregation and tech matching.
- Incentivise startups and MSMEs to list rural-focused solutions and link with credit, procurement, and pilot funding.
- Use AMRIT data for policy feedback—identifying gaps in technology availability, adoption bottlenecks, and regional disparities.
BRICS Environment Ministers’ Meeting 2026
Why in News?
- India will host the 12th BRICS Environment Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi on 18 August 2026, with the Senior Officers’ Meeting of the Environment Working Group (EWG) and the Contact Group on Climate Change and Sustainable Development scheduled for 17 August.
- The meeting is being held under India’s BRICS Chairship 2026 theme: “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.”
India’s Four Priority Areas
- Sustainable Lifestyles: Promoting environmentally responsible consumption and production patterns.
- Afforestation & Forest-Fire Management: Strengthening Forest restoration, fire prevention and disaster resilience.
- Circular Economy: Promoting resource efficiency, recycling, reuse and reduction of waste.
- Climate Adaptation: Enhancing resilience of vulnerable communities and ecosystems to climate impacts.
BRICS Environment Working Group
- The BRICS Environment Working Group (EWG) was established in 2015, during the first BRICS Environment Ministers’ Meeting in Moscow.
- It provides a platform for BRICS countries to exchange environmental best practices, coordinate policies and strengthen collective action on shared ecological challenges.
Why is it Significant?
- Global South Perspective: BRICS countries can collectively push for greater consideration of developing countries’ concerns regarding climate finance, technology transfer and capacity building.
- Climate Resilience: Cooperation on adaptation is particularly important because developing economies face disproportionate impacts from extreme weather and environmental degradation.
- Forest Conservation: Joint approaches to afforestation and forest-fire management can strengthen biodiversity conservation and carbon sinks.
- Circular Economy: Collaboration can reduce resource dependence and support sustainable industrialisation.
- India’s Leadership: The meeting provides India an opportunity to shape the environmental agenda of the expanded BRICS grouping.
Anemia Mukt Bharat (AMB) Abhiyaan
Why in News?
- On 12–13 August 2026, the Health Ministry held a two-day national workshop on Anemia Mukt Bharat (AMB) with all States/UTs to operationalise the revised AMB guidelines and launch the AMB Application & Portal for beneficiary-level tracking.
- The revised guidelines, issued on 29 June 2026 by the 16th Central Council of Health & Family Welfare (CCHFW), upgrade AMB from 6×6×6 to 7×7×7 and shift focus from mere supplementation to Test–Treat–Talk–Track (T4) plus diet diversification.
Background
- AMB is the flagship life-cycle approach programme to reduce anemia across six key beneficiary groups: children, adolescents, pregnant & lactating women, women of reproductive age, and others.
- Earlier strategy: 6×6×6 (6 beneficiary groups, 6 interventions, 6 institutional mechanisms) focused largely on IFA supplementation, deworming, and basic testing.
Key Features (Revised 7×7×7 & T4)
- 7×7×7 framework:
- 7 beneficiary groups: Adds low birth weight babies (<2.5 kg) as a new category.
- 7 interventions:
- Prophylactic IFA
- Anemia testing (Hb)

SHINE Programme
Why in News?
- The second edition of ICMR-SHINE 2026 was conducted on 11–12 August 2026, with the programme concluding on 12 August, bringing biomedical and public-health research directly to school students across India.
- The nationwide initiative covered 83 locations across 31 States and Union Territories and was expected to reach around 30,000 students from Classes 9–12.
What is SHINE?
- SHINE = Science & Health Innovation for NextGen Explorers, an outreach initiative of the Department of Health Research (DHR) and Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
- It aims to expose young students to biomedical research, public health, laboratory science and innovation, encouraging them to consider scientific research as a career.
- The programme was inspired by the call for students to “spend a day as a scientist”, converting science education from classroom learning into practical exposure.
Key Features of SHINE 2026
- Target Group: Students of Classes 9–12 from government, government-aided and private schools.
- Nationwide Reach: ICMR institutes, Model Rural Health Research Units (MRHRUs) and affiliated field units participated across 83 locations.
- Hands-on Learning: Students visited laboratories, witnessed demonstrations, participated in interactive sessions and interacted directly with ICMR scientists.
- Research Exposure: Activities covered themes related to health, nutrition, infectious diseases, viruses, biomedical science and public health.
- Student Research Competition: The 2026 edition also announced a nationwide student research competition to encourage continued scientific engagement beyond the programme.

SURYAPATH TIRANGA GLOBAL RELAY
Why in News?
- On 15–16 August 2026, the first-ever SURYAPATH TIRANGA Global Relay concluded, covering 54 countries and multiple time zones from Fiji (East) to San Francisco, USA (West) to mark India’s 80th Independence Day.
- The relay was a key component of the Har Ghar Tiranga 2026 campaign and symbolically traced the path of the rising sun, with sequential flag hoistings at Indian missions.
Background
- Har Ghar Tiranga is a nationwide (and now global) initiative under the Ministry of Culture to encourage citizens and the diaspora to display the Tricolour at homes and public spaces around Independence Day.
- SURYAPATH TIRANGA was conceptualised as a global relay where the Tricolour is “digitally passed” from one Indian mission to another as the sun rises across time zones, reinforcing unity and national pride.
Key Features
- Route & coverage:
- Started at 1:30 AM IST from Fiji and ended at 8:30 PM IST in San Francisco, spanning ~19 hours of continuous flag hoisting.
- Involved 54 Indian missions and posts across continents, with 21 missions doing coordinated hoistings in the early phase (from Fiji to Qatar, etc.).
- Symbolism:
- “Carry the Tiranga from one sunrise to the next” – the sun’s movement becomes a metaphor for India’s civilisational continuity and global diaspora connect.
- Integrated with the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram (1876–2026), with many missions centring events around this milestone.
- Diaspora engagement:
- Flag hoistings, cultural programmes, and Vande Mataram renditions at missions in London, Canberra, Singapore, Doha, Wellington, Seoul, etc.
Significance
- Projects soft power and diaspora diplomacy, showcasing India’s global footprint and emotional connect with its overseas community.
- Reinforces national identity and unity by making the Tricolour a shared, time-zone-spanning experience.
