National Scholarship Portal (NSP)
 
Why in News?
On 10 August 2026, the Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan launched an NSP-based scholarship system, under which more than 6,000 beneficiaries received β‚Ή21.35 crore through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), highlighting the use of digital platforms for transparent scholarship delivery.
 

About National Scholarship Portal
  • National Scholarship Portal (NSP) is a Mission Mode Project under the National e-Governance Plan (NeGP) that provides a common digital platform for scholarship application, verification, sanction and disbursement.
  • It brings together scholarship schemes of the Union Government, State Governments and Union Territories, creating a single-window system for students.
  • The portal follows the SMART approach — Simplified, Mission-oriented, Accountable, Responsive and Transparent — with the objective of reducing leakages, duplication and delays.
Key Features
  • One-Time Registration (OTR): OTR has been mandatory for scholarship applications from Academic Year 2024–25, allowing students to create a common digital identity for applications.
  • Direct Benefit Transfer: Approved scholarship amounts are transferred directly to beneficiaries' bank accounts, improving transparency and reducing intermediary leakages.
  • Eligibility & Verification: The system facilitates eligibility checking, institute verification, nodal-officer scrutiny and application tracking.
  • Academic Year 2026–27: NSP opened for applications from 1 June 2026; students can generally apply for one merit-based scholarship and one or more welfare-based scholarships, subject to scheme-specific eligibility.

Mobile Food Testing Laboratories (MFTLs): New Accreditation Scheme
 
Why in News?
Recently, India launched its first accreditation scheme for Mobile Food Testing Laboratories (MFTLs). The scheme was introduced by the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL), under the Quality Council of India (QCI), at the “Gunvatta Samanvaya” event in New Delhi.
 

Key Features of the Scheme
  • Establishes a framework for accrediting mobile food testing labs to ensure reliable, quality-assured and internationally benchmarked testing services.
  • Aims to take accredited food testing closer to communities, especially in remote and underserved areas.
  • Expected to improve access to quality testing and support faster regulatory intervention in food safety cases.
  • Part of NABL’s Integrated Assessment Programme, which seeks to reduce duplication in assessments and promote mutual recognition among regulatory and quality bodies.
  • The initiative is projected to strengthen food safety surveillance, enhance consumer confidence and improve ease of doing business.
Background: MFTLs / “Food Safety on Wheels”
  • The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has already deployed 305 Mobile Food Testing Laboratories, known as “Food Safety on Wheels” (FSWs), across 35 States/UTs.
  • These mobile units conduct on-the-spot testing, distribute rapid test kits, and create public awareness in villages, towns and remote areas.
  • The effort is part of the SoFTeL scheme (Strengthening of Food Testing System in the Country including provision of Mobile Food Testing Labs).
Significance
  • Shifts mobile food testing from basic screening toward accredited, quality-assured testing.
  • Enhances the credibility of results from mobile labs for regulatory and enforcement purposes.

Indian Culture Portal – Version 2.0
 
Why in News?

The Ministry of Culture on 10 August highlighted the upgraded Indian Culture Portal (ICP) Version 2.0 in Parliament, emphasising its role in expanding digital access to India’s cultural heritage and the integration of cultural institutions across States/UTs.

About Indian Culture Portal
  • Indian Culture Portal (ICP) is a national digital platform providing a single-window access to India’s cultural heritage, including museums, libraries, archives, monuments, manuscripts, artworks and other cultural resources.
  • The original portal was launched in December 2019 to democratise access to India's history, literature, arts, traditions and heritage. Version 2.0 was launched in March 2026 by Culture Secretary Vivek Aggarwal at Kartavya Bhawan, New Delhi.
Key Features of Version 2.0
  • Modern Architecture: Uses a React-based frontend and Drupal 10 backend, making the platform more scalable, secure and responsive.
  • AI-enabled “Bharti”: An AI-powered chatbot assists users in content discovery, intelligent search and multilingual interaction.
  • 22 Indian Languages: Integration with BHASHINI enables multilingual access and interaction across 22 Indian languages.
  • Progressive Web Application: The portal works across desktops, tablets and smartphones without requiring a conventional app installation.
  • Immersive Heritage Experience: Provides 3D walkthroughs and 360-degree virtual tours of cultural and heritage sites.
  • Advanced Search: Metadata-based search, filtering and improved navigation allow researchers and students to locate digitised cultural resources more efficiently.
  • Institutional Integration: Museums, archives, libraries and other cultural institutions can contribute resources through APIs and standardised metadata exchange.

  • Digital Preservation: Helps preserve fragile manuscripts, artworks, photographs and other cultural resources in digital form.

NAVYA Programme: Skill Training for Adolescent Girls
 
Why in News?

Recently, the Government informed the Lok Sabha that 1,060 girls from 15 States/UTs have been trained under the NAVYA programme as of 30 June 2026. Jammu and Kashmir accounted for 137 trainees, among the higher-performing regions. The government also announced that NAVYA will be expanded to 100 aspirational districts from 27 May 2026.

Full Form and Launch
  • NAVYA: Nurturing Aspirations through Vocational Training for Young Adolescent Girls.
  • Launched on 24 June 2025 in Sonbhadra, Uttar Pradesh.
  • Joint initiative of:
    • Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE)
    • Ministry of Women and Child Development (MWCD).
  • Implemented under Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana 4.0 (PMKVY 4.0).
Objectives
  • Provide vocational skill training to adolescent girls in non-traditional and emerging job roles.
  • Promote socio-economic independence and women-led development.
  • Focus on aspirational districts, tribal areas and North-Eastern regions.
  • Equip girls with both technical skills and life skills (communication, financial literacy, digital competence, workplace safety, personal hygiene).
Target Group and Coverage
  • Age: 16–18 years.
  • Minimum qualification: Class 10 pass.
  • Initially piloted in 27 aspirational and North-Eastern districts across 19 States.

Russula griseopurpurata: New Mushroom Species from India
 
Why in News?
A new species of mushroom, Russula griseopurpurata*, has been described from India and published in the scientific journal Phytotaxa on 5 August 2026. The discovery was made by researchers from Gauhati University, Assam, working with colleagues from West Bengal.

Taxonomic Details
  • Genus: Russula (family Russulaceae, order Russulales).
  • Subsection: Cyanoxanthinae.
  • The species is classified as a novel taxon within this subsection, based on combined morphological and molecular (ITS DNA sequencing and phylogenetic) analysis.
  • The holotype (primary reference specimen) was collected on 22 July 2022 by Dr Niranjan Roy from Jirang in Ri Bhoi district, Meghalaya, at an elevation of about 320 metres, growing under a sal tree (Shorea robusta).
  • In total, three specimens were examined: one from Meghalaya and two from West Bengal. The Meghalaya specimen is deposited under collection number GUBH 20331 with sequence accession PQ432811.
Morphological Features
  • Cap: Greyish-purple, developing cracks with age.
  • Gills: Show characteristic forking near the stalk.
  • These macroscopic features, combined with DNA-based phylogenetic placement, distinguish it from closely related Russula species.
Significance
  • Adds to the documented fungal diversity of India, particularly in the Eastern Himalayan and sub-Himalayan regions.
  • Highlights the importance of integrating morphology and DNA barcoding in modern fungal taxonomy.
  • Contributes to global understanding of the genus Russula, which comprises about 2,000 species worldwide.

Edibility and Safety
  • While some Russula species are edible, the edibility and safety of R. griseopurpurata for human consumption have not been established.

Thoti Tribe: Endangered PVTG in Telangana
 
Why in News?
On 9 August 2026, reports highlighted that the Thoti community, a Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG) in Telangana, is facing a sharp decline and possible extinction. Community leaders have urged the state and central governments to implement targeted schemes to address their socio-economic and health challenges.

Profile of the Thoti Tribe
  • Classification: Recognised as a Scheduled Tribe and designated as a PVTG in 1983.
  • Geographical distribution: Primarily concentrated in the erstwhile Adilabad district of northern Telangana, especially in remote forested and hilly areas.
  • Population: According to the 2021 Census, the Thoti population is only 4,811, making them one of the smallest PVTGs in the state.
  • Cultural affiliation: Historically associated with the Raj Gonds of the Gondwana region.
  • Traditional occupation:
    • Singing Gond Gatha (oral epics) to preserve the history and legends of Gondwana.
    • Women traditionally practised tattooing as part of healing and cultural rituals.
Current Challenges
  • Shrinking population: Very small and declining numbers raise concerns about long-term survival.
  • Hereditary health disorders: Reports indicate high prevalence of genetic and chronic health conditions within the community.
  • Economic instability: Loss of traditional livelihoods, limited access to stable employment and dependence on irregular wage labour.
  • Education and healthcare gaps: Low literacy levels and inadequate access to quality health services.
  • Cultural erosion: Decline in oral traditions, language use and traditional practices such as tattooing and Gond Gatha singing.
  • Habitat and environmental stress: Climate variability and changes in forest and land use affect their traditional resource base.
Government and Academic Attention
  • The Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) has funded a two-year study (2025–2027) by Osmania University to examine the Thoti tribe’s geo-ethnic identity, genetic patterns and socio-economic transformations.
  • In 2022, researchers from IIT-Hyderabad documented Thoti traditional practices, including tattooing and folk music, to preserve their cultural heritage for posterity.

Myoglobin: New Roles in Metabolism and Plant-Based Meat
 
Why in News?
Two major developments involving myoglobin have emerged in 2026:
  • In June 2026, researchers at Helmholtz Munich reported that myoglobin, long known as an oxygen-storage protein in muscle, also plays a key regulatory role in thermogenic (brown) fat and whole-body energy expenditure.
  • In August 2026, scientists at Imperial College London announced that they have genetically engineered lettuce and tobacco plants to produce animal myoglobin in their chloroplasts, a step toward more sustainable plant-based meat alternatives.
What is Myoglobin?
  • Myoglobin is a small, haem-containing protein found mainly in cardiac and skeletal muscle.
  • It binds and stores oxygen, facilitating its delivery to mitochondria during muscle activity.
  • Clinically, elevated blood myoglobin is used as an early biomarker of muscle injury, including heart attacks.
  • In food science, myoglobin is responsible for the red colour and part of the flavour and texture of meat.
New Metabolic Role: Myoglobin in Brown Fat
  • Traditionally, myoglobin was thought to function primarily in muscle oxygen storage.
  • The Helmholtz Munich study used adipose tissue–specific myoglobin knockout mice to show that:
    • Loss of myoglobin in fat reduced energy expenditure, impaired cold adaptation, disrupted lipid metabolism and increased susceptibility to diet-induced obesity.
    • Myoglobin was required for efficient fatty acid utilisation and mitochondrial metabolism in thermogenic adipocytes.
    • Restoring myoglobin expression in brown fat improved metabolic parameters and reduced weight gain in obese mice.
  • The findings suggest that myoglobin in brown fat helps the body burn lipids and maintain energy expenditure, making it a potential target in obesity and metabolic disorder research.
Molecular Farming: Myoglobin in Plants
  • Researchers at Imperial College London used biolistic transformation (“gene gun”) to insert pig and cattle myoglobin genes into the chloroplast genomes of lettuce (Lactuca sativa) and tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum).
  • Results:
    • Stable production of functional myoglobin in plants.
    • Yields of approximately 810 mg/kg dry weight in lettuce and 800 mg/kg in tobacco.
    • Chloroplast-based expression gave about three times higher yields than earlier methods.
  • Significance:
    • Provides a plant-based, scalable source of a key meat protein.
    • Could improve the taste, colour and texture of plant-based meat analogues without relying on animal slaughter.
    • Part of the broader field of molecular farming, where plants are engineered to produce high-value animal proteins.
  • Separately, biotech firm Moolec Science reported in April 2026 the stable expression of bovine myoglobin in pea seeds, further expanding molecular farming platforms for food and biotechnology.
Clinical and Diagnostic Relevance
  • Myoglobin remains an important early cardiac biomarker.
  • In February 2026, Indian researchers developed a low-cost, graphene-based biosensor for rapid detection of myoglobin in blood, aiding early diagnosis of heart attacks.
