Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL)
Why in News?
The Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL) is currently in the news as it celebrated its Diamond Jubilee Year on October 4, 2026, marking exactly six decades (60 years) of operations since its incorporation in 1967.
Overview of UCIL
- Status: It is a Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE) functioning under the administrative control of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE).
- Establishment: Founded on October 4, 1967, and is headquartered at Jaduguda in the East Singhbhum district of Jharkhand.
- Core Mandate: It is the only company statutorily authorised in India to mine and chemically process uranium ore to supply fuel for the nation's nuclear power reactors.
- Legal Monopoly: Governed under the Atomic Energy Act, 1962, which designates uranium as a "prescribed substance," barring private participation in its mining and extraction.
Operational Footprint
- Jharkhand Operations: Operates six underground mines (Jaduguda, Bhatin, Narwapahar, Turamdih, Bagjata, and Mohuldih) and one open-pit mine (Banduhurang).
- Andhra Pradesh Operations: Manages an underground mine and a major processing facility at Tummalapalle, which holds some of the country’s largest reserves.
- Processing Infrastructure: Active ore milling and processing plants are strategically located in Jaduguda and Turamdih.
- Exploration Pipeline: Works in tandem with the Atomic Minerals Directorate for Exploration and Research (AMD), which hands over proven deposits to UCIL for commercial extraction.
Challenges & Strategic Outlook
- Low-Grade Ore: Domestic uranium ore is of relatively low quality (extracting only 200–300 grams per tonne), making India heavily reliant on imports for its immediate nuclear capacity expansion.
- Future Project Locations: Pre-project and exploratory activities are expanding beyond Jharkhand into Rajasthan (Rohil), Karnataka (Gogi), Chhattisgarh, and Telangana.
- Long-Term Transition: In alignment with India's three-stage nuclear energy programme, UCIL's long-term objective is to facilitate a gradual programmatic shift toward utilizing the country's vast thorium reserves.
