UNICORN (Unified Complex Radio Antenna) naval radar system

Why in News?
On 29 September 2026, Japan asked India to speed up its internal procedures for implementing the UNICORN technology-transfer/co-development arrangement. This renewed attention on the project after the two countries had reached a basic understanding on the transfer.

System Design & "Ninja" Stealth Technology
  • Unified Integration: Conventionally, naval warships feature numerous exposed antennas scattered across multiple points on a ship's superstructure. UNICORN consolidates these scattered communication, surveillance, and electronic warfare antennas into a single, unified horn-shaped mast or dome (radome).
  • Radar Cross-Section (RCS) Reduction: By enclosing the exposed wiring and structures inside a sleek, aerodynamic composite structure, it drastically minimizes a warship's radar signature. This heavily upgrades the vessel's stealth capabilities, making a large destroyer appear the size of a small civilian boat on enemy radars.
  • Also Known As: In technical naval contexts, the system is designated as the NORA-50 integrated mast.
Technical Capabilities
  • Multi-Band Efficiency: The mast houses a vertical stack of critical systems, including tactical air navigation (TACAN), Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) transponders, LINK-16, electronic warfare support measures (ES-R/ES-C), Wi-Fi, and UHF/VHF links.
  • Interference Prevention: The structure prevents high-power transmission signal interference, allowing simultaneous secure communication across diverse frequencies.
  • Operational Range: The optimized layout enhances the max detection distance of incoming radio waves, facilitating early warning tracking of hostile missiles and drones.
  • Weather Shielding: The specialized external casing protects sensitive and sophisticated components from harsh, corrosive maritime weather.
Manufacturing and Development Partners
  • Original Developers: The technology was originally co-developed by a consortium of three Japanese corporations: NEC Corporation, Sampa Kogyo K.K., and The Yokohama Rubber Co., Ltd..
  • Current Deployment: The system is actively deployed by the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) on its advanced Mogami-class multirole frigates.
  • 'Make in India' Execution: Under the co-development framework, state-owned Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) will serve as the Indian production partner. Japan will share the core design expertise, while BEL will manage local production and system integration for the Indian Navy's next-generation warships.
Strategic Geopolitical Impact
  • Indo-Pacific Deterrence: The alliance reinforces naval domain awareness and maritime safety across the critical Indo-Pacific sea lanes.
  • Quad Synergy: Both nations belong to the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad). Implementing identical stealth infrastructure increases interoperability between the Indian and Japanese fleets during joint operations.
  • Diversification: For India, collaborating with Japan opens up a premium alternative pipeline for defence technology, gradually reducing long-term hardware reliance on traditional suppliers like Russia.
