Typhon Missile System

Why in News?
Russia has formally warned Japan that deploying the US Typhon mid‑range missile system on Japanese soil—even for exercises—is “absolutely unacceptable” and a threat to Russian security, hinting at possible countermeasures.

Key Features and Technical Capabilities
  • Manufacturer: Developed and manufactured by the American aerospace giant Lockheed Martin.
  • Weapon Blueprint: Bypassed decades of standard research by modifying and adapting the U.S. Navy's existing shipborne Mk 41 Vertical Launching System (VLS) onto a mobile trailer.
  • Dual-Missile Compatibility: Engineered as a flexible, modular platform capable of launching two distinct types of missiles:
    • Tomahawk Cruise Missiles: Delivers highly precise subsonic land-attacks and deep strikes up to 1,500–2,000 kilometres away.
    • Standard Missile-6 (SM-6): Acts as a high-speed interceptor and short-range ballistic missile capable of targeting ships and low-altitude threats past 320–370 kilometres.
  • Hypersonic Defence: The integrated SM-6 is currently one of the few assets in the U.S. inventory structurally capable of intercepting incoming hypersonic missiles during their terminal phase.
  • Battery Composition: A full operational battery consists of four road-mobile, trailer-mounted launchers (housing a combined total of 16 missiles), a mobile command post, and supporting power vehicle generators.
Strategic Importance and Geopolitics
  • The INF Treaty Gap: Created directly after the U.S. withdrew from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty in 2019. It bridges the tactical range gap between shorter-range precision strike missiles (500 km) and long-range hypersonic weapons.
  • High Mobility and Survivability: The containerised, road-mobile configuration allows the launcher to be transported via cargo aircraft and quickly hidden or repositioned. This complicates enemy targeting while cutting weapon flight times to regional flashpoints.
  • Indo-Pacific Deterrence: Prior to Japan, the system was dynamically deployed to the northern Philippines. From these island chains, its strike range blankets China’s eastern seaboard, the South China Sea, and the Taiwan Strait.
  • European Expansion: The U.S. has finalized agreements for episodic Typhon deployments to Germany, designed as a temporary long-range shield until European domestic missile programs mature.
