Why in News?
The T-Series tanks (specifically the T-72 and T-90 main battle tanks) are in the news because India's Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav performed the Bhoomi Pujan (foundation stone ceremony) for a new ₹472-crore T-Series Tanks Overhaul Project.
Project Specifications & Capabilities
- The event took place at the Vehicle Factory, Jabalpur (VFJ) in Madhya Pradesh.
- Annual Capacity: The new Jabalpur facility is designed to overhaul 80 tanks per year.
- Implementing Organization: The project is run by VFJ, which is a specialized unit of Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited (AVNL)—a Mini Ratna Defence Public Sector Undertaking.
- Target Fleet: The facility handles both the T-72 (Ajeya) and T-90 (Bhishma) Main Battle Tanks (MBTs).
Strategic Significance & Supply Logistics
- Addressing Shortfalls: The Indian Army requires roughly 230 tank overhauls annually to keep its fleet battle-ready.
- Existing Facilities: The Heavy Vehicles Factory (HVF) in Avadi, Chennai, currently handles 150 tank overhauls per year, leaving a structural deficit that Jabalpur will fulfill.
- Technological Upgrades: The overhaul process extends beyond mechanical restoration to integrate modern sensors, digital ballistic computers, thermal imaging sights, and advanced communications.
- Supply Ecosystem: The project relies on supply lines for complex mechanical, hydraulic, electronic, and electrical sub-assemblies, fostering local MSME participation.
