Suryastra Rocket System

Why in news?
The Suryastra Rocket System is in the news because Pune-based private defence firm NIBE Limited successfully conducted on May 18 and 19, 2026 its live-fire weapon validation trials for the Indian Army at the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur, Odisha.

System Overview & Background
  • First of its Kind: Suryastra is India's first domestic universal, multi-caliber, long-range guided rocket launcher system.
  • Industrial Collaboration: It is manufactured in India by NIBE Limited under a technology transfer and collaboration agreement with Israel’s Elbit Systems, adapting their Precise & Universal Launching System (PULS) architecture.
  • Procurement: The Indian Army fast-tracked the system under a β‚Ή293-crore Emergency Procurement (EP) contract signed in January 2026.
Technical Specifications and Capabilities
  • Dual Range Variants: The system supports multiple ranges to fill specific tactical roles:
    • 150 km Variant: Designed for tactical battlefield support and close conflict zones. During recent trials, it recorded a Circular Error Probable (CEP) of just 1.5 meters.
    • 300 km Variant: Targeted at deep-strike operations against strategic infrastructure behind enemy lines. It recorded a CEP of 2 meters in the trials.
  • Universal Launcher Architecture: A single modular platform can accommodate and fire entirely different rocket calibers and tactical munitions (such as 122mm Acular rockets, 306mm EXTRA rockets, or 370mm Predator Hawk missiles) without requiring hardware modifications.
  • Loitering Munitions Integrated: Beyond standard precision rockets, the platform can deploy kamikaze drones or loitering munitions up to a range of 100 km to provide simultaneous real-time reconnaissance and strike flexibility.
  • Mobility & Survivability: Mounted on a heavy-duty, all-terrain tactical truck chassis, it utilizes an automated loading system and features "shoot-and-scoot" architecture, allowing it to fire a full salvo and relocate within minutes to avoid enemy counter-battery fire.
Strategic Significance
  • Bridging the Firepower Gap: The system bridges the critical operational gap between traditional short-range field artillery and heavier, highly expensive ballistic missile forces.
  • Standoff Advantage: By hitting targets up to 300 km away with near-perfect accuracy, it enables the Indian Army to neutralize command structures, radar arrays, and logistics hubs deep inside hostile territory while keeping launcher crews safe from direct combat exposure.
