Promotion of South Indian Culture Heritage
 
Why in News?
On March 16, 2026 the government detailed several active initiatives by autonomous bodies like the Kalakshetra Foundation and the South Zone Cultural Centre (SZCC) to preserve and propagate classical and folk-art forms from the region. 
 

Key Institutions
  • Kalakshetra Foundation (Chennai): Trains in Bharatanatyam and Carnatic music; organizes Sunadam, Kathakali Festival, and Annual Art Festival.​
  • South Zone Cultural Centre (Thanjavur): Promotes folk/tribal arts, Koodiyattam, Pulikali, and Shadow Puppetry via festivals like Onam and Dasara.​
  • Sangeet Natak Akademi: Supports nationwide performances of South Indian forms like Kathakali, Kuchipudi, and Yakshagana.
  • Kutiyattam Kendra, ThiruvananthapuramUnder the Sangeet Natak Akademi, this center works to preserve and promote Koodiyattam, the ancient Sanskrit theatre of Kerala.
Major Initiatives
  • Financial grants for training, workshops, research, and documentation of traditional arts.​
  • Artist support includes honorariums, travel, and accommodation for folk/tribal performers.​
  • Cultural exchange programs showcase South Indian heritage across India and abroad.
  • Zonal centres (including Thanjavur) document endangered arts through audiovisual projects and Guru-Shishya schemes.
