President’s rule ends in Manipur; CM sworn in
President’s Rule in Manipur was revoked on February 4, 2026, ending nearly a year of central administration. Following the revocation, a new government was sworn in to restore elected governance in the state.
- New Chief Minister: Yumnam Khemchand Singh, a BJP leader and former Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly, was sworn in as the 13th Chief Minister of Manipur.
- Deputy Chief Ministers: The new administration includes two Deputy Chief Ministers representing different ethnic communities to promote stability:
- Nemcha Kipgen (BJP): Representing the Kuki-Zo community; she took her oath virtually from Manipur Bhavan in New Delhi.
- Losii Dikho (NPF): Representing the Naga community.
- Cabinet Appointments: Other key ministers sworn in include Govindas Konthoujam (BJP), who has been assigned the Home portfolio, and Khuraijam Loken (NPP).
- Background: President's Rule was originally imposed on February 13, 2025, after the resignation of then-CM N. Biren Singh. The state assembly had remained under suspended animation during this period.
- Legislative Session: The Manipur Legislative Assembly convened its 7th session on February 5, 2026, shortly after the new government took office
