Geographic Location & Area
  • Nicknamed "Pearl Island", it is the largest island in Vietnam, spanning an area of 567 square kilometres.
  • It is a teardrop-shaped island that anchors a broader archipelago of 22 small islands.
  • Located in the Gulf of Thailand, the island sits geographically closer to the coast of Cambodia than to mainland Vietnam.
  • The highest topographical point on the island is Mount Chua, which rises to 630 metres.
Environment & Climate
  • UNESCO Biosphere Reserve: A significant portion of the island is heavily protected under the Phú Quα»‘c National Park.
  • It experiences a tropical monsoon climate with two distinct seasons: a dry season from November to April and a rainy season from May to October.
  • The island is world-renowned for its pristine white-sand beaches, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and vast coral reefs.
Infrastructure & Mega Developments
  • APEC 2027 Host: The island has been officially designated to host the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) 2027 Summit, transforming it into a major hub of global infrastructure development.
  • First Urban Light Rail Transit (LRT): Construction is currently underway for a 17.7 km LRT system connecting Phu Quoc International Airport to the upcoming APEC Convention and Resort Center. It will be the first island-based light rail system in Vietnam.
  • Commercial Boom: Massive seaside infrastructure projects are transforming the southern coast, highlighted by 15 luxury international hotels and an expansive 4,030-seat mega-theatre.
  • Environmental Strain: The island's rapid urban expansion has drawn scrutiny from global platforms like Mongabay, noting that the conversion of dozens of hectares of "special use" forestland inside the National Park has strained local ecosystems.
