The Union Minister of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change launched the PaleoIndia Portal. This launch coincided with the 111th Foundation Day of the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) and the Animal Taxonomy Summit–2026 to advance digital conservation.
Key Developers and Partners
- Joint Initiative: Developed through a collaborative effort between the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) and the National Centre for Sustainable Coastal Management (NCSCM), Chennai.
- Mapping Technology: The platform utilizes dynamic geological maps provided by the Geological Survey of India (GSI) to plot geographic findings accurately.
Vital Specifications and Features
- Pan-India Coverage: The portal maps the spatial distribution of fossil fauna across all 28 States and 8 Union Territories.
- Fossil Repository: It currently archives data on over 5,000 fossil specimens.
- Diverse Classification: The stored data spans ancient Mammalia (mammals), Reptilia (reptiles), Aves (birds), Pisces (fishes), Amphibia (amphibians), Mollusca, Arthropoda, Foraminifera, Echinodermata, and Ichnofossils (trace fossils).
- Real-time Crowdsourcing: It integrates a real-time data upload system that welcomes field-based inputs and citizen science contributions.
Primary Objectives
- Digital Conservation: To create a secure, centralized digital inventory for preserving India's rich paleontological history.
- Public and Research Access: To bridge traditional biological knowledge with modern technology, giving global researchers a real-time data flow.
- Heritage Safeguarding: To protect and track vulnerable geographic sites bearing significant fossil records across the country.
