Why in News?
Operation Amistad (Op Amistad) is in the news because the Government of India launched a major Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) mission to assist Venezuela.
The Venezuela Crisis Context
- A humanitarian mission by India named “Operation Amistad” (amistad = “friendship” in Spanish) to assist Venezuela after devastating earthquakes struck the country on 24 June 2026.
- The Disaster: Northern Venezuela was shaken by twin earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale, making it the strongest seismic activity the country has faced in over a century.
- Severe Impact: The disaster resulted in massive casualties, causing hundreds of confirmed deaths and leaving thousands injured or homeless under collapsed debris.
Medical Team & Relief Composition
- Elite Medical Contingent: India deployed a specialized 41-member medical task force drawn from the 60 Para Field Hospital of the Indian Army.
- Specialist Officers: The team includes nine specialized medical officers trained specifically in rapid trauma care, disaster management, and emergency field surgeries.
- Tonnage Breakdown: The massive 35-tonne cargo contains 30 tonnes of general emergency relief infrastructure alongside 6 tonnes of vital life-saving medicines and surgical kits.
Advanced Technology Deployed
- Army Field Hospital: The deployment includes a fully functional, self-reliant Indian Army Field Hospital unit equipped with Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) pallets.
- BHISHM Cubes: India sent two state-of-the-art, indigenously developed BHISHM (Bharat Health Initiative for Sahyog Hita and Maitri) portable hospital cubes.
- Cube Capabilities: These modular, ultra-compact healthcare units can be unboxed and set up in a matter of minutes to provide emergency medical treatment for up to 200 patients simultaneously.
Diplomatic Ethos & Strategic Focus
- Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam: The Ministry of External Affairs emphasized that the mission aligns with India’s civilizational philosophy of "The World is One Family".
- Coordinated Execution: The Indian medical team is instructed to directly interface and cooperate with local Venezuelan emergency forces to conduct deep search-and-rescue and trauma management operations.
