NRAA-Funded Wild Rice Conservation Project

Why in News?
The Borjuli wild rice conservation site in Assam’s Sonitpur district has been declared a Biodiversity Heritage Site by the National Biodiversity Authority.

Project Overview & Implementing Agencies
  • Official Title: "In-situ Conservation and Management of Wild Rice (Oryza rufipogon) in Sonitpur District of Assam."
  • Funding Authority: The project is completely funded by the National Rainfed Area Authority (NRAA), which operates under India's Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare.
  • Execution Partners: The ICAR–National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources (ICAR-NBPGR), New Delhi, has been actively implementing it since 2022 alongside the Assam State Biodiversity Board.
  • Core Objectives: The focal goals are the systemic exploration, targeted conservation, and exhaustive characterization of wild rice germplasm.
The Target Species (Oryza rufipogon)
  • Unique Traits: This wild rice variant holds essential genes that provide natural resistance to critical diseases and pests.
  • Climate Resilience: The plant natively displays notable tolerances against submergence (flooding) and heavily acidic soils.
  • Behavior: It is a photosensitive species that naturally flowers during short-day periods (typically November and December), throwing its seeds immediately upon maturity.
Biological & Agricultural Significance
  • Genetic Reservoir: Wild rice holds irreplaceable genetic sequences necessary to breed high-yielding, biofortified, and weather-proof modern crop varieties.
  • In-Situ Advantage: Conserving the species directly in its native habitat enables it to continue evolving alongside shifting regional climate stresses.
  • Strategic Security: Safeguarding these crop wild relatives directly boosts India's long-term agricultural sustainability and overall food self-reliance.
Implementation Strategy
  • Community Model: The project establishes a collaborative, participatory framework involving local communities to protect habitats situated outside standard state sanctuaries or national parks.
  • Land Management: Essential land agreements were reached out of agricultural borders, including securing a critical no-objection certificate from the local Borjuri Tea Estate to shield the habitat.
  • Broader Framework: Senior administration, including NRAA CEO Dr. Chandra Shekhar Kumar, has outlined plans to replicate this operational model for other wild relatives of vital food crops across rainfed areas.
