New species of fruit flies are Recently in the news because of two major discoveries in India and one critical biosecurity event in New Zealand reported in early March 2026.
Species
- Acidoxantha paratotoflava: Medium-sized greenish-yellow fly with four black thoracic stripes, larger abdominal black spots, and unique hook-like male structures; named for resemblance to misidentified A. totoflava.
- Hemilea suneriae: Reddish-brown fly with black dots and a distinctive wing pattern featuring one clear "window" (hyaline indentation) unlike relatives' two.
Additional Context
- Researchers also described the male of Euphranta nigripeda, solving a 1913 mystery (only female known previously).
- Builds on prior Indian discoveries like Euphranta undulata (Ri-Bhoi, Meghalaya, 2025) and four Zeugodacus species (2024).
- Fruit flies (Tephritidae) pose pest risks to crops, with global trade aiding invasions.
