New GI-Tagged Tribal Crops of Madhya Pradesh
Why in News?
On June 26–28, 2026—recognises Sitahi Kutki, Nagdaman Kutki, Baigani Arhar, and Mahakoshal Chhatriya Dhan these four unique, traditional agricultural crops preserved by local tribal communities in Madhya Pradesh have been officially granted the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) Tag.
Sitahi Kutki & Nagdaman Kutki (Dindori Minor Millets)
- Crop Classification: Both are highly nutritious varieties of Little Millet (locally known as Shree Anna).
- Geographical Origin: Primarily cultivated in the tribal-dominated, hilly landscapes of the Dindori district.
- Health & Nutritional Profile: Exceptionally rich in dietary fibre, essential minerals, and vital cell-protecting antioxidants.
- Climate Resilience: Naturally hardy plants capable of thriving in poor soils and extreme weather conditions with minimal water.
Baigani Arhar (Baigani Purple Pigeon Pea)
- Crop Classification: A distinct indigenous variety of Pigeon Pea (commonly known as Toor Dal).
- Tribal Heritage: Deeply integrated into the agricultural identity and legacy of the Baiga tribe.
- Cultivation Practices: Grown using completely organic, chemical-free, age-old tribal cultivation techniques.
- Distinct Quality: Possesses a significantly higher natural protein content and a unique sweet flavour compared to standard commercial varieties.
Mahakoshal Chhatriya Dhan / Chhatriya Chawal (Chhatriya Paddy)
- Crop Classification: A premium, traditional variety of indigenous aromatic rice.
- Geographical Origin: Cultivated traditionally across the fertile wetlands spanning the Jabalpur and Katni districts of Madhya Pradesh.
- Distinct Quality: Historically revered for its extreme plant hardiness, superior culinary adaptability, strong rich aroma, and local taste profiles.
Institutional Support & Marketing Impact
- The rigorous scientific evaluation and documentation process was jointly spearheaded by the Jawaharlal Nehru Krishi Vishwavidyalaya (JNKVV), Jabalpur, and the State Agricultural Mandi Board.
- Role of JNKVV: The university established a dedicated GI Cell with financial backing from the Mandi Board to complete the multi-year documentation and scientific filing.
- Transition from Self-Consumption: The certification transitions these rare crops from baseline self-consumption items into premium, verified global commodities.
- Year of Farmers' Welfare: The approvals coincide with Madhya Pradesh observing 2026 as the "Year of Farmers' Welfare", specifically pushing for the global branding of traditional millet varieties.
