New bi-layered single-piece dental implant

Why in News?
Scientists at ARCI (International Advanced Research Centre for Powder Metallurgy and New Materials), an autonomous institute under the Department of Science and Technology (DST), have developed a new bi-layered single-piece dental implant.

Dual-Material Architecture
  • Titanium Base: The load-bearing fixture (the part that screws into the jawbone) is made of Ti₆Alβ‚„V alloy, providing excellent mechanical strength and supporting bone integration (osseointegration).
  • Zirconia Crown Region: The top aesthetic portion is made of Yttria-Stabilized Zirconia (YSZ), which offers superior wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and a natural tooth-like appearance.
  • Defect-Free Interface: Microscopic analysis shows a highly stable transition zone between the metal and ceramic layers, with zero cracks, delamination, or pores.
Advanced Manufacturing Process
  • Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS): The implant is fabricated using SPS, an advanced powder-metallurgy technique that allows materials with completely different melting points to bond seamlessly.
  • Custom Graphite Die: A customized tapered graphite die was engineered to precisely control high temperatures and achieve a remarkable material density of 99.5%.
  • Precision Machining: Following sintering, a five-axis Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine is used to mill out the final threaded implant shape.
Mechanical & Biological Performance
  • High Mechanical Robustness: Lab tests revealed a hardness value of up to 1350 HV, compressive strength of 1550 MPa, and a flexural strength of 310 MPa, which matches or exceeds standard commercial dental implants.
  • Exceptional Biocompatibility: In vitro cellular biological tests confirmed that the material is entirely non-cytotoxic.
  • Cellular Viability: MTT assays using mouse fibroblast cells showed metabolic activity exceeding 90%, well above the global safety threshold for medical biomaterials.
  • Blood Safety: Hemolysis testing showed negligible red blood cell damage, proving its long-term safety inside the human body.
