Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope

Why in News?
NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is scheduled to launch on 30 August 2026 (7:26 a.m. EDT / ~4:56 p.m. IST) aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy from Kennedy Space Center, Florida.

Specifications & Mission Details
  • The Name: Named in honour of Dr. Nancy Grace Roman, NASA’s first Chief of Astronomy, widely celebrated as the "Mother of Hubble".
  • Orbital Destination: The telescope will travel 1.5 million kilometers away to the second Sun-Earth Lagrange point (L2 orbit), sharing the same stable region as the James Webb Space Telescope.
  • Mirror Size: Features a 2.4-meter primary mirror, identical in size to the Hubble Space Telescope's mirror but engineered to be significantly lighter.
  • Mission Lifespan: It is built for a 5-year primary mission, with built-in fuel and engineering capacity to operate for 10 years or longer.
  • Data Avalanche: The telescope is expected to transmit a massive 1.375 to 1.4 terabytes of data daily, all of which NASA will open freely to the public.
Primary Science Objectives
  • Investigating Dark Energy: By mapping out billions of galaxies across massive swaths of the sky, it aims to uncover why the expansion of the universe is accelerating.
  • Massive Exoplanet Census: Utilizing a gravitational phenomenon called microlensing, the mission will search the center of our Milky Way to discover tens of thousands of new cosmic worlds.
  • Cosmic Time-Lapse Maps: Unlike Hubble or Webb which zoom in on small, specific targets, Roman will act as a cosmic panoramic camera. It will survey the sky 1,000 times faster than Hubble to witness how cosmic structures evolve.
  • Wide Field Instrument: A giant 300-megapixel near-infrared camera that captures a field of view 100 times larger than Hubble’s in a single snapshot.
  • Coronagraph Instrument: A high-contrast technology demonstration designed to block out intense starlight. This allows astronomers to directly image faint, hidden planets and surrounding stellar dust disks.
