Mushk Budji

Why in News?
Mushk Budji, Kashmir's prized indigenous aromatic rice variety, is recently in the news due to a severe market and price crisis caused by over-expansion into "unsuitable" agro-climatic zones, leading to an oversupply that has crashed prices from ₹25,000 down to ₹10,000 per quintal.

Botanical & Physical Profile
  • Grain Type: It is an indigenous, short-grain, bold, and round paddy variety.
  • Appearance: Grains feature a distinct light, ivory colour with a slightly translucent, pearl-like appearance.
  • Texture: Once cooked, the rice becomes fluffy, slightly sticky, and characteristically chewy.
  • Flavour Profile: It is globally renowned for its intense musky fragrance and a deep, delicate, nutty flavour.
Geographic & Climatic Conditions
  • Origin: It is native to the higher reaches of the Kashmir Valley in Jammu & Kashmir.
  • Altitude: It strictly thrives in high-altitude zones between 5,000 and 7,000 feet above mean sea level.
  • Traditional Hubs: Cultivation is historically concentrated in the Anantnag district (specifically Sagam, Panzgam, and Soaf Shali villages).
  • Aroma Secret: Recent studies published in Nature Scientific Reports by SKUAST-Kashmir found that specific low temperatures at high altitudes trigger the development of its 35 unique aromatic compounds.
Legal, Cultural Status & Historical Context
  • GI Tag: It was granted a prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag on 31 July 2023 to protect its regional authenticity.
  • Culinary Royalty: It is the premier choice of rice for Wazwan, Kashmir's iconic and traditional multi-course marriage feast.
  • Exclusivity: Due to low historical yields and premium costs, its everyday use is limited, making it a luxury reserve for festivals and weddings.
  • Disease Crisis: In the 1980s, the variety was driven to the brink of extinction by devastating outbreaks of Rice Blast Disease (a destructive fungal infection).
  • The Revival: In 2007, scientists at SKUAST-Kashmir launched a genetic improvement programme, successfully breeding blast-resistance into the traditional strain to save it.
