Why in News?
Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently highlighted the thousand-year history of Gujar Modhera Sun Temple, recalling its destruction during invasions and its subsequent reconstruction, while also highlighting the village’s transformation into India’s first 24×7 solar-powered village.
Core Architectural Components
The temple complex is built in the Māru-Gurjara (Solanki) architectural style on a single east-west axis and consists of three main components:
- Surya Kund (Ramakund):
- A massive, rectangular stepped reservoir located at the front of the complex.
- Features geometric, inverted pyramid-style steps displaying 108 miniature shrines dedicated to various Vedic gods and goddesses.
- Sabhamandapa (Assembly Hall):
- A magnificent grand hall used for religious gatherings and performances.
- It is supported by 52 intricately carved pillars, which chronologically represent the 52 weeks of the solar year.
- Gudhamandapa (Shrine Hall & Sanctum Sanctorum):
- The main inner temple area houses the Garbhagriha (the innermost sanctum).
- The walls are embellished with detailed carvings of the 12 Adityas (representing the sun god according to the 12 months of the year).
Astronomical Precision & Alignment
- Equinox Phenomenon: The temple is built with immaculate geographical precision. During the vernal and autumnal equinoxes, the first rays of the rising sun pass directly through the temple doors to illuminate the inner sanctum.
- Tropic of Cancer: The site is strategically positioned almost exactly on the Tropic of Cancer, functioning historically as a solar observatory and a stone calendar.
Key Facts
- Location: Situated on the banks of the Pushpavati River in the Mehsana district of Gujarat, India.
- Historical Origin: Constructed around 1026–1027 CE during the reign of King Bhima I of the Chaulukya (Solanki) dynasty.
- Current Status: No active worship or rituals take place here today. It is a protected monument carefully managed by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
- Annual Festival: The temple grounds host the popular Uttarardha Mahotsav Dance Festival every January, showcasing classical Indian dance forms against the illuminated heritage backdrop.
