Mizoram’s Natural History Museum
 
Why in News?
On July 7, 2026, the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change announced that Mizoram’s Natural History Museum (NHM) has been designated as India’s 21st Designated Repository under the Biological Diversity Act, 2002. This status, following a review by the National Biodiversity Authority (NBA), recognizes the museum's role in preserving regional biodiversity.
 

Establishment & Location
  • Inception & Location: Established in 2022 under Mizoram University in Aizawl.
  • Strategic Location: Situated in the Indo-Burma Biodiversity Hotspot.
  • Voucher Specimens: Authorized to curate regional flora (pteridophytes, fungi) and fauna (reptiles, amphibians, insects).
  • Type Specimens: Researchers must now deposit new species types here.
  • Collection Size: Holds over 500 curated biological specimens.
  • Taxonomic Expertise: Supported by experts covering seven distinct taxonomic groups.

  • Regional Biodiversity Hub: Supports the North-east region, which boasts over 7,500 species of flowering plants and 2,000 unique faunal species.
  • Endemic Conservation: Focuses on rare local wildlife, such as the Leptobrachella tamdil amphibian.

  • Logistical Efficiency: Enables localized storage and authentication of samples.
