Methamphetamine Tablets

Why in News?
Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) and the Assam Rifles launched a massive crackdown along the North-Eastern frontier, successfully seizing 76 kg of high-grade methamphetamine tablets.

About
  • Synthetic Stimulant: It is a powerful, man-made central nervous system stimulant that severely accelerates the body’s functions.
  • Pill Form: While often known as crystalline "ice" or "crystal meth", in tablet form it is widely mixed with caffeine and sold on the streets.
  • Street Names: It is globally referred to by names like Yaba (meaning "crazy medicine" in Thai), Speed, Uppers, Chalk, or Crank.
  • Legal Variant: In strictly monitored medical scenarios, a legal version is FDA-approved under the brand name Desoxyn to treat severe ADHD and obesity.
Impact on the Brain and Body
  • Dopamine Flood: Meth blocks the brain's natural recycling of dopamine, flooding the reward system with extreme surges of the chemical.
  • Short-Term High: Users experience immediate euphoria, intense energy, heightened alertness, rapid breathing, and a dangerous spike in body temperature.
  • Severe Crash: The short-lived euphoria is rapidly followed by neurotransmitter depletion, causing a profound physical and psychological crash.
Major Health Risks and Side Effects
  • Cardiovascular Damage: It causes severe heart rate irregularities, elevates blood pressure, damages blood vessels, and is linked to 1 in 6 heart attacks in high-use regions.
  • Neurotoxicity: Prolonged use damages dopamine and serotonin neurons, resulting in permanent memory loss and motor skill deficits.
  • Psychiatric Disorders: It commonly triggers severe paranoia, violent behaviour, deep anxiety, and full-blown drug-induced psychosis resembling schizophrenia.
  • Physical Deterioration: Addicts suffer from rapid, severe weight loss, skin lesions from compulsive scratching, and extreme tooth decay known as "meth mouth".
  • Illicit Classification: Methamphetamine is categorized as a highly dangerous psychotropic substance globally.
  • Stringent Laws: In India, it is strictly banned under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. Trafficking, possession, and manufacturing invite harsh, non-bailable jail sentences.
