Why in News?
MatsyaMetri is in the news because the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) has successfully developed this innovative smartphone application to measure the length and width of fish without any physical handling.
Overview & Development
- Developing Authority: It was developed by Dr. Eldho Varghese, a senior scientist and ICAR-National Fellow at the CMFRI Official Platform.
- CMFRI Headquarters: The institute is headquartered in Kochi, Kerala.
- Platform Compatibility: The app is built specifically for ARCore-supported Android devices, utilizing advanced image-based technology.
- Project Support: The application's development is backed by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) under the Department of Agricultural Research and Education, Government of India.
Features & Mechanism
- Contactless Measurement: It eliminates the need to touch or physically handle fish, significantly reducing stress or damage to the aquatic resource.
- How It Works: Users create a sampling session, point their smartphone camera at a flat surface, and place the fish within the view. The app automatically detects the surface and overlays an on-screen measuring guide.
- Batch Sampling: It allows researchers to measure multiple individuals of the same fish species within a single sampling session.
- Automated Data Processing: The system automatically records the size metrics and generates length-frequency distributions using appropriate class intervals.
- Data Export: The recorded data points, along with the corresponding photographs, are securely saved within the session and can be exported as a CSV file for further scientific analysis.
Purpose & Significance
- Target Users: The app is custom-designed for fisheries scientists, researchers, and field survey teams.
- Simplifying Fieldwork: It transitions the smartphone into a high-precision scientific tool, accelerating the rapid and systematic collection of biological data directly on the field.
- Fisheries Management: Standardized length-frequency datasets are crucial for population analysis, stock assessment, and tracking resource conditions, which ultimately helps design better marine conservation policies.
