MALHAR 2026
Why in News?
MALHAR 2026 has been in the news because Vice President Shri C. P. Radhakrishnan inaugurated it on 21 August 2026 in New Delhi as a youth-centric, monsoon-themed celebration of Indian classical music, aimed at connecting younger generations with India’s intangible cultural heritage.
The National Classical Music Festival (New Delhi)
- The Concept: A youth-centric, monsoon-themed cultural event specifically dedicated to the "Malhar" family of classical Hindustani ragas, traditionally associated with the arrival of rains.
- Organizers: Spearheaded by the organization Antar Hriday Connect, with former Foreign Secretary and Rajya Sabha MP Shri Harsh Vardhan Shringla serving as Chief Patron.
- Free Public Access: To democratize classical arts, the grand musical concerts featuring prominent vocalists, percussionists, and instrumentalists were kept free for the youth.
- Honouring Legends: Celebrated maestros, including Hindustani vocalist Pt. Ulhas Kashalkar and Kathak exponent Pt. Rajendra Gangani, were formally felicitated for lifetime contributions.
St. Xavier's College Festival (Mumbai)
- The 2026 Theme: The festival operated under the banner "Iridescence: The Spectrum of Expressions", symbolizing the fluid and multi-coloured nature of youth identity and artistic perspectives.
- Technological Integration: For the first time, organizers built a custom WebGL interactive 3D Virtual Campus allowing global online participants to explore St. Xavier’s historic campus digitally.
- Massive Footfall: Managed entirely by a student workforce of over 1,500 volunteers, the festival welcomed over 15,000 to 20,000 attendees from colleges nationwide.
- Social Impact Pre-Events: Leading up to the main days, the Malhar workforce organized a "Run for a Cause" marathon for cancer awareness and large-scale beach cleanups across Mumbai.
- Key Events: Featured highly publicized interactive sessions with prominent figures like IAS officer Tukaram Mundhe, alongside live dubbing masterclasses, independent media conclaves, and musical concerts.
