Malana village-Himachal Pradesh

Why in News?
Malana village is in the news because on 7 October 2026 after the Central Bureau of Narcotics (CBN) conducted a Jan Samvad (public outreach dialogue) programme there. The programme was organised under the Yuva Raksha initiative to discourage.

Geography and Location
  • High Altitude Setting: Malana is a deeply secluded ancient village situated at an altitude of approximately 2,652 metres (8,701 feet) above sea level.
  • Hidden Valley: It is located in the Malana Nala, a side valley of the scenic Parvati Valley within the Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh. It sits under the shadow of the Chanderkhani and Deo Tibba peaks.
  • Isolated Dialect: The locals speak Kanashi, a unique and endangered Sino-Tibetan language.
  • Intelligibility: Kanashi is entirely unwritten and is not understood by anyone outside of Malana, serving as a powerful linguistic barrier that preserved their centuries-long isolation.
Governance: The "World's Oldest Democracy"
  • Independent Judiciary: Malana is widely reputed to be one of the oldest standing democracies in the world. It operates its own bicameral parliamentary system independent of the mainstream Indian administrative grid.
  • The Authority of Jamlu Devta: The absolute final authority in the village is their local deity, Jamlu Devta (Sage Jamdagni). All civil and criminal disputes are resolved locally by an 11-member village council representing the voice of the deity.
Strict Social Taboos & The "No-Touch" Rule
  • Ritual Purity: The villagers maintain deep-seated beliefs regarding ritual purity and caste-based isolationism.
  • Strict Penalties for Contact: Outside visitors are strictly forbidden from touching any locals, their houses, shops, or temple walls. Accidental contact results in a heavy financial fine (often upwards of ₹3,500) used for purification rituals.
  • No-Contact Transactions: When buying items, tourists must place their money on the floor or a wooden block instead of passing it directly to a local shopkeeper's hand.
Malana Cream
  • Cannabis Trade: The village economy has historically revolved heavily around the production of "Malana Cream," a highly potent, globally renowned strain of hashish extracted from local cannabis plants.
  • Evolving Landscape: Despite its underground notoriety among backpackers, the influx of modern communication, hydroelectric revenue, and intensifying anti-narcotics enforcement have pressured the village to gradually integrate with mainstream trade.
  • The Legend of Alexander: Local folklore claims that the inhabitants of Malana are the direct descendants of the stranded soldiers of Alexander the Great's army. However, modern historical analyses and genetic evaluations show no scientific backing for this narrative.
