Why in News?
A tragic boat capsizes occurred near Banswara (Rajasthan) on May 5, 2026, where a boat carrying 10 people overturned. While eight were rescued, search operations were launched for two missing individuals, including a child.
Origin and Course
- Origin: Northern slopes of the Vindhya Range in the Dhar district of Madhya Pradesh.
- States Covered: It is an interstate river flowing through Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Gujarat.
- Unique Feature: It is the only river in India that crosses the Tropic of Cancer twice.
- U-Turn: The river makes a characteristic 'U' shaped loop in Rajasthan (Vagad region) before heading southwest into Gujarat.
- Mouth: It empties into the Gulf of Khambhat (Arabian Sea) through a wide estuary.
Hydrology and Tributaries
- Total Length: Approximately 583 km.
- Major Tributaries: Som, Jakham, Anas, Panam, Bhadar, and Moran.
- Siltation: The river carries significant silt, which has contributed to the thinning of the Gulf of Khambhat over centuries.
