Why in News?
India’s Digital India BHASHINI Division (DIBD) held a focused India–Nepal Language AI engagement in Kathmandu—comprising the BHASHINI Sangam workshop and the BHASHINI Shilpi developer session—alongside an academic interface with Kathmandu University (31 Aug–2 Sep 2026).
BHASHINI Shilpi (Developer Session)
- Venue: Embassy of India, Kathmandu
- Audience: Developers, tech practitioners, students, innovators from Nepal
- Format: Live demos, technical Q&A, hands-on orientation to BHASHINI APIs and resources
- Framework: “Develop → Solve → Scale → Innovate with BHASHINI” to move from idea to real-world deployment.
BHASHINI Sangam (International Workshop)
- Venue: Embassy of India, Kathmandu
- Participants: Government, academia, research, tech and innovation ecosystems from both countries
- Goal: Co-creation of datasets, models, and locally relevant applications; advance multilingual and voice-first AI for inclusive access.
Academic Interface: Kathmandu University
- Engagement: Interactive session with the university’s Center for Digital Public Infrastructure and AI (DPI-AI) + meeting with the Vice Chancellor
- Focus: Joint collaboration on language technologies, datasets, and applications tailored to Nepal’s linguistic diversity.
Foundational Framework & Strategy
- Bilateral Base: The sessions directly advance the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between DIBD and Kathmandu University.
- The "Shilpi" Development Pillars: Developer training was structured around a strict four-part operational framework: “Develop with BHASHINI”, “Solve with BHASHINI”, “Scale with BHASHINI”, and “Innovate with BHASHINI”.
- Platform Integration: Tech practitioners were given hands-on entry to BHASHINI’s Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) for advanced speech recognition, translation, and voice synthesis.
Primary Objectives & Target Languages
- Regional Inclusion: The collaboration aims to build a "Voice-First Language Translation Platform" targeting languages heavily shared across the open borders.
- Linguistic Breadth: Beyond national Nepali, the initiative targets deep-tech capabilities in regional and low-resource languages including Maithili, Newari, Tamang, and Gurung.
- Script Digitisation: A critical component includes preserving historical and traditional South Asian scripts that are digitally underrepresented, specifically Prachalit Lipi and Ranjana Lipi.
Practical Applications & Projected Impact
- Inclusive Digital Public Infrastructure: The platform will deploy localized, voice-activated applications so non-English speakers can navigate digital banking, e-governance, and online services natively.
- Tech Co-Creation: Shifting from absolute model dependencies, India and Nepal are focusing heavily on collecting localized cross-border language datasets to fuel future speech-to-text accuracy.
- Global Pre-Summit Momentum: The Kathmandu workshop officially served as a recognized pre-summit anchor leading up to the global AI Impact Summit.
