Why in News?
The Government of India has officially approved the large-scale central procurement of Khopra (copra) and Totapuri mangoes from farmers in Tamil Nadu to shield them from severe price crashes and market instability.
Khopra (Copra) Procurement
- Procurement Scheme: Handled officially under the Price Support Scheme (PSS).
- Pricing Mechanism: The entire yield will be acquired at the officially designated Minimum Support Price (MSP).
- Approved Quantity: The government will acquire a total of 87,226 metric tonnes of Khopra.
- Product Breakdown: The target includes 87,000 metric tonnes of milling Khopra alongside 226 metric tonnes of ball copra.
- Total Valuation: The financial outlay backed by the central government exceeds βΉ1,049.16 crore.
Totapuri Mango Procurement
- Procurement Scheme: Arranged under the central Market Intervention Scheme (MIS), used specifically for perishable horticultural items.
- Approved Quantity: The sanctioned purchase limit is set at 96,879 metric tonnes for the 2026 season.
- Fixed Rate: The Market Intervention Price is established at βΉ1,545.41 per quintal (100 kg).
- Intended Impact: The intervention shields farmers from sudden price drops, providing immediate price stability and ensuring they do not have to sell at a loss.
