Why in News?
Indian Railways has approved the deployment of Kavach Version 4.0 over 607.7 route kilometres in the Lucknow Division of North Eastern Railway. The project has an estimated cost of ₹252 crore and will cover the identified remaining sections of the division.
Core Safety Features
- Collision Avoidance: Automatically prevents head-on, rear-end, and side collisions by continuously monitoring train positions on the same track.
- Signal Protection (SPAD): Prevents Signal Passing at Danger (SPAD) incidents by automatically applying the brakes if a locomotive pilot misses a red signal.
- Overspeeding Control: Continuously regulates train movement within designated speed limits; brakes engage automatically if the pilot fails to act.
- Adverse Weather Operations: Ensures trains run safely at permissible speeds even during severe low-visibility conditions like dense winter fog.
- Auto-Whistling & SOS: Triggers automatic whistling at level-crossing gates and features built-in emergency SOS messaging capabilities for loco pilots.
Key Upgrades in Version 4.0
Compared to older versions (like Version 3.2), Kavach 4.0 introduces major technical enhancements designed by the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO):
- Kavach 4.0 is the most advanced iteration of India's indigenous Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system.
- Enhanced Location Accuracy: Leverages superior tracking to determine exact train positions, which is critical in busy or complex rail layouts.
- Improved Signal Aspect Data: Delivers comprehensive, real-time yard signal data to locomotive cabins, simplifying operations at large railway junctions.
- OFC Station-to-Station Interface: Utilises Optical Fibre Cables (OFC) for direct station-to-station communication, creating a reliable network mesh.
- Electronic Interlocking Integration: Features a direct digital interface to existing Electronic Interlocking systems, reducing manual relays and latency.
The Technology Stack
- Global Standards: Certified to Safety Integrity Level-4 (SIL-4), representing the highest benchmark in global railway safety signalling.
- Component Framework: The system functions using an integrated grid of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags on tracks, ultra-high frequency (UHF) radio towers, onboard locomotive computers, and station infrastructure.
- Atmanirbhar Bharat: Being a cost-effective, indigenous technology, it promotes domestic engineering while cutting heavy reliance on expensive imported signalling equipment.
Scalability and Rollout Progress
- Deployment Footprint: Kavach infrastructure already protects thousands of kilometres of railway tracks and has been integrated into over 6,153 locomotives.
- Human Resource Training: Over 94,000 railway technicians, operators, and pilots have undergone specialised training modules through the Secunderabad-based Indian Railways Institute of Signal Engineering and Telecommunications (IRISET).
- Future Capacity: The government envisions scaling the manufacturing and deployment framework to eventually cover up to 10,000 route kilometres annually.
